Sometimes job hunting is just awful. It can make you want to pull your hair out. You spend hours looking through page after page of job listings, looking for something that interests you and that you are qualified for.
Then there is the act of applying for them, waiting to see if you get an interview, and starting all over if you don’t get a call back.
You might not even know if you are doing this right. Is your resume good or is actually not highlighting you as well as it should? Are you no longer good at interviews?
Your local Employment Development Department could help you with the process. They offer info, training, and support as you try to find the job for you.
What is the Employment Development Department?
The Employment Development Department (EDD) is part of the Labor and Workforce Development Agency. It’s part of the executive branch of each state.
It offers a variety of services to millions of people under the Job Service, Unemployment Insurance, Disability Insurance, Workforce Investment, and Labor Market programs.
This is a partner to the EDD. Basically, the EDD provides Job Service workers, while they provide the jobs throughout the states.
They also help with
Unemployment insurance, also known as unemployment benefits or unemployment compensation depending on the state, are payments made by the state or authorized bodies to unemployed people.
The benefits are funded by a compulsory governmental insurance system, not taxes on people. Depending on where you live the money can be enough to cover basic needs or compensate for lost time compared to your previous salary.
This is only given to those who are registered as unemployed and under conditions that they are actively looking for work. You also have to be laid off and not fired in most states.
This also known as DI or disability income insurance, or income protection. It’s a form of insurance that makes sure the beneficiary’s earned income covers the risk that a disability makes it hard for that person to work.
This does not mean that you have to be injured on the job, that’s a different type of insurance. You could still apply to this even if you were injured because of a car accident.
It covers paid sick leave, short-term disability benefits (STD), and long-term disability benefits (LTD).
About 1 out of every 4 people in the US workforce will get a disability before they retire.
Workforce Investment Boards
These are regional entities created to implement the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 in the US.
The board’s main goal is to direct federal, state, and local funding to workforce development programs.
Labor Market Programs
These are government programs that intervene in the labor market to help people find jobs. Many of these programs grew out of earlier public works projects that were created to help with the massive unemployment in the US.
The active labor market programs are divided into 3 main categories. The first is public employment services. These services, like job centers and labor exchanges, help unemployed people find work.
They do this by giving them information about how to find openings, help with interview skills, and helping write a CV.
The next section is training schemes. These are classes and apprenticeships that help the unemployed improve their vocational skills. Then they become more employable.
The final section is employment subsides. This can be in either the private or public sector, and they directly create more jobs to help with unemployment. These are usually short term measures that are supposed to help the unemployed get experience so they can find a more permeant job.
Who Should Use the Employment Development Department?
People who have had a hard time finding work and don’t have a lot of job experience are good fit. They are also good for anyone who has no idea what they are doing when it comes to job hunting.
This service can also be extremely helpful for those who have not had to look for a job in a very long time. It’s a good way to get updated on the new commonplace practices.
It’s a wonderful tool for veterans who are entering civilian life. This is because it’s been so long since they have had to look for a job, that the extra help will be beneficial. Also, it seems like veterans have a hard time translating their skills that they learned during their service to skills employers would be interested.
What Does the Employment Development Department Do?
As mentioned before, they offer a variety of different services. While we gave a general idea of what these services are before, now we are really going to break things down for you.
As mentioned before, it helps workers who have been injured and not able to work anymore. How they are able to help them financially is through money that has been taken from worker’s payroll deductions.
You’ve probably noticed the deduction on your checks. That’s why it’s there if you hadn’t already known that.
Millions of people get help every year across the country.
To get benefits, you need to file a claim for it either using an online form or a paper one. Have at least $300 in wages that SDI was taken from in the past year. Then lastly, have your doctor certify your disability by completing the “Physician/Practitioner Certification”.
Also, under SDI is Paid Family Leave (PFL). This is a benefit to help people who have to take care of seriously ill children, parents, and the like. The benefits help cover the lost wages while you are taking care of them.
It shouldn’t have to be said, but you really need to have a disability or be taking care of someone ill to get these benefits. They take fraud very seriously and you will be in a load of trouble if you try to fool them.
This helps people who have lost their jobs and meet the eligibility requirements. Which are that a person:
If you choose to quit your job or you were fired, you will need to talk to someone from the EDD on the phone so they can learn why you quit. Depending on the circumstances, it will decide whether or not you are eligible.

Job Hunting Services
The EDD gives people different lessons so that they can find a job. These services include career counselling, job skills training, job search training workshops, labor market information, and more.
The training will help people clean up their resumes, discover what their best skills are, and know what jobs to look for.
They will also help people learn how to look for a job. A lot of people actually struggle with this and don’t know how to find quality jobs that they are qualified for.
They will also host mock interviews that way people can practice. Interviews are hard for anyone, let alone someone who hasn’t had gone to one for years.
These departments are making an extra effort to make sure that veterans get help they need to find a job. The California Employment Development Department rewarded nearly $5 million to 10 different organizations that help veterans find employment in promising careers. This is in the Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Sacramento, and Stanislaus areas.

This is a wonderful resource for anyone that needs help. Some people are embarrassed to ask, but there is no shame in getting help. Everyone has a hard time finding a job, the market is really diverse. Employers are looking for more and more skills and experience.
It’s better to get help and get a job you enjoy, then struggle to find one and settle for the sake of having one.
People who are unemployed or disabled should definitely take advantage of the help this department offers. Official paperwork can be so hard to fill out and the language can be confusing.
Every state should have one of these departments, all it takes is a quick Google search and you’ll find one near you. Go for it, why make it harder than it has to be?
